Abstract

This community service activity aimed to facilitate teachers at Tumbuh High School Yogyakarta to learn to speak using the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) standard through a ten-meeting training programme. Seven teachers participated in this teacher development training we (the authors) facilitated. The ten meetings consisted of a pre-test, six face-to-face training sessions, a post-test, a facilitator-participant discussion, and a discussion session between the facilitators and the school’s curriculum coordinator regarding the participants’ progress. During the six face-to-face training sessions, the participants familiarised themselves with three parts of IELTS Speaking test in which they had to talk about familiar topics, to respond to questions on social issues written in cards, and to respond to the examiner’s follow-up questions, in Part I, Part II, and Part III, respectively. There was an increase of scores of the post-test compared to the pre-test, suggesting the training was quite a success.

Author Biographies

Adaninggar Septi Subekti, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacan (UKDW)

The author, who obtained her M.Sc. in TESOL from University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, currently works as a lecturer at the English Language Education Department, Faculty of Education and Humanities of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW), Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Editor-in-Chief of SAGA Journal UKDW, she is also a reviewer of IJELTAL journal published by IAIN Samarinda. Her research interest includes L2 learner’s individual differences, Global Englishes, L2 writing, critical literacies, and literature. Throughout her teaching career, she has taught students from various levels of education, including teaching ESP to Medical students and Biology students as well as teaching non-English teachers of High Schools. Though her specialty is in English instruction, she was once also a teacher of the Indonesian language at Arizona State University from 2013 to 2014.

The author is a lecturer at the English Language Education Department, Faculty of Education and Humanities of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW). She obtained her M.A. degree in English Language Teaching from de la Salle University, the Philippines. Her research interest includes L2 speaking and cross cultural understanding.
